Michael Moore's new film Capitalism: A Love Story just hit festivals this weekend. It received a 7-minute standing ovation at the Toronto film fest and is making it's way to other select theaters in early October- generating much discussion on how capitalism has failed us. It already has a HUGE following of people awaiting the release in their cities.

I am planning to rally Illinois members to attend an opening weekend showing with me and hang out on the sidewalks after passing out Addendum DVDs and I'm encouraging other TZM folks to do the same if there will be a showing near you. It's a great opportunity to connect with an audience who is already open to critiques of the system and enjoys documentaries that expose the issues. I think it's crucial to help his audience connect the problems not just to capitalism but to the root: the monetary system.

That is a great idea! I'll be sure to round up some activists and DVDs when it opens here in Florida.

Although, I would like to hear of some ideas on how to get the message to folks that aren't already searching for the information that we have to share.

Great idea, Jen. It was a random DVD from a complete stranger that turned me around. FYI, I was raised republican and went to christian school. I voted for Bush in 04 and thought that anyone who thought like I think now was un-American. So doing things like this works. It really does. Just remember not to talk about the movie too much, just hand it to people with a smile and kindness. Talking too much kills it in situations like that. Ask questions like, "What do we do next?" and hand it to them. If they ask for details, it may be wise to tell them you don't want to ruin the movie or something similar. Again, great idea. This method works.

I think you just made my day, I wonder sometimes if the random DVD idea works and you have thus proved to me that it does, especially with you background that shows how effective this approach can be, thanks scringer

I certainly agree that this will be a good way to spread our message, but before we embrace Mr. Moore's film, make sure that you research it. I watched a documentary that was made by a couple of Canadians who actually originally intended on making a movie about him because they thought he was a cool guy. The more they investigated him the less they liked him. He has actively fabricated situations to make his point. At one point he staged a news report about an auto worker who allegedly stole a news van to get attention to the Chrysler plants that were closing down here in Michigan. He literally hired an actress, and staged the news report. The incident never took place.

Some of the things he says in his movies is good, just be very careful about how seriously you take him.

Never watched Roger & Me so I wouldn't know. Anyone know that MM used these tactics in his other docs?

I'm sorry to say I don't think it's relevant if one of his reports were fake or not. This film is going to be a huge hit with people that like him or those that hate or are having a problem with the current system. That's a lot of people. The others and some media are going to try and put him down, they would never be interested in the movement anyway. I see a win win situation. This guy doesn't offer any real solution, actually no one else those! After watching a film like his addendum would be perfect. It would be a second source stating the money system is fake! Many people that like him are open minded!
